More than 20 Olympic medal winners, mentors and further world-class competitors have endorsed a letter demanding a halt to the capital punishment of a boxing champion and coach, who is on death row in Iran.

Escalating International Outrage

Amidst rising global condemnation over the nation's escalating use of executions as a means of oppression, the powerfully expressed statement denounces the government's decision to confirm the death sentence of the athlete.

The boxer, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and indicted of supporting an resistance movement. He has passed 60 months in prison, where he has been abused and held in isolation.

“Sport is meant to encourage optimism, unity, and fortitude,” the supporters stated. “The capital punishment of a winner for his political views is a clear violation on these values and a warning to any competitor who attempts to voice opinions.

History of Executing Sports Figures

The appeal noted that the boxer's situation was not unique and highlighted Iran’s history of executing sports champions for their views, for example a football captain, skipper of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, an athlete, a 27-year Iranian wrestling champion, was put to death.

Other endorsers to the appeal include Tracy Edwards, who captained the inaugural female-only team in a global yacht race and was the initial female to receive a renowned yachting trophy; the former leader of the national squad Craig Foster; and a footballer, who was in the national team for the international competition.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was arrested in early 2020. The charges against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of government belongings”. His sentence has been overturned twice but on the fourth of October it was maintained on the latest review. His legal proceedings was condemned as “grossly unfair” by advocates and organizations.

Call to International Body

The call to prevent the athlete's capital punishment is subsequent to a 2023 appeal to the global human rights chief for rights, backed by more than one hundred advocates and groups, urging action to avert the sports figure's execution.

Death Penalty Surge

As per reports, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has reached alarming dimensions”. In 2023, authorities sentenced at least over 850 people – a nearly half rise on 2022. In the prior period, data showed 972 deaths, constituting the highest number since the year 2015. Over eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in 2025.

Activists and protesters are focus, especially in the aftermath of the the year 2022 demonstrations. Specialists say the regime have employed the death penalty to stifle opposition, create fear among the population and reinforce their hold on power.
