The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
